A packing list for altitude

Val Gardena. Cold, height, evening that starts early. The suitcase is not a summer one.

You pack for a closed door and a table that seats the whole party. Fire, timber, snow on the road. A hotel corridor has a dress code. This house does not. It has a ski room for the boots and a table for twelve.

Chantilly at altitude is not a contradiction. Black lace reads against timber. The Naiad gown holds the evening. The hourglass blazer and the high-waisted trousers do the rest — the car, the fire, the walk back through the house. Pack structure. Pack dark silk. Leave the bias cut for heat.

The list is short on purpose.

• A black lace slip that earns dinner.
• A gown that still reads after the fire.
• Wool that sits over silk, then comes off at the table.
• Trousers that survive a ski-room floor.
• One more layer than you think. Height is cold even in August.
